Allan Scott Family Estate Winery Marlborough New Zealand
Allan Scott Family Estate Winery Story
Allan Scott family estate winery based in Marlborough New Zealand was founded in 1990, although Allan planted some of the first vines in Marlborough in 1973. At that time Allan was working as a contractor for Montana. In 1975 Allan and his wife Catherine (Cathy) purchased a block of land, started growing grapes, and selling the fruit. Head hunted by Corbans as viticulture manager gave Allan the perfect base to continue learning. Allan and Cathy continued as contract growers until 1990 when they joined the increasing small numbers of family owned wineries in launching their own estate label. In 1991 they built the Allan Scott Family Estate Cellar Door. A comments book in the restaurant dates back to December 1991.
The Family Estate is family business involving Allan and Cathy’s 3 children. Their eldest daughter, Victoria, looks after marketing and hospitality and is regularly seen helping out serving in the restaurant. Josh is chief winemaker and also founder of Moa Brewery. Sarah trained as a winemaker and viticulturist and spend most of her time in the vineyards.
Allan Scott Estate Wines
Most of the Allan Scott estate vineyards (100 hectares at time of writing) are based in Marlborough, however, they also have a 6 hectare vineyard in Central Otago. They grow many different varieties in Marlborough, however they only grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Central Otago.
Allan Scott Family Estate make a range of Method Traditionnelle wines in 3 labels using one or both of Chardonnay or Pinot Noir fruit. The Cecelia range, a tribute to Cathy uses fruit from Marlborough. Sasa vintage 2009 is 100% Chardonnay and made for daughter Sarah. Called Sasa as Josh could not say Sarah when he was young. Scott Base emperor uses only Central Otago fruit.
Their estate range is everything one would expect from Marlborough wines. Full of fruit, fresh and refreshing.
The Grandchildren help out at times in the winery, hence, the generations label. All of this range are single vineyard wines expressing the grape variety and where they are grown.
