Nautilus Estate Winery Marlborough New Zealand

Nautilus Estate winery

The story

Robert Hill Smith owns Nautilus Estate winery and also owns the Yalumba winery in Australia. Nautilus is a mid sized winery. They have a mixture of Nautilus owned vineyards and contract growers vineyards. The combined vineyards allow them to cover the diverse soil types of the Marlborough wine region. They source grapes from the Wairau Valley and the Awatere Valley 25 kms further south. As the family own and operate it, so they are eligible to be a member of the Family of Twelve.  This is a group of 12 family-owned great wineries from each of NZ’s wine growing regions.

The Nautilus shell

Admired since ancient Greek times the Nautilus shell is mathematically perfect. This natural balance is something they seek to express in their Nautilus estate wines. The shell is divided into chambers. Each of the chambers is precisely 1.618 larger than the chamber before, therefore, a great example of the golden ratio found in nature.
The Nautilus winery is named after the shell.

Nautilus Estate winery Cellar Door

The Nautilus estate wines are available for tasting during the whole year at their cellar door. Their Brut bubbles is 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. One of their most awarded wines and a great example of this style. Other varieties usually on tasting are Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. From time to time they also taste their Gruner Veltliner and/or Albarino. Both of these varieties are still quite new in the region. However, in 2018 their Albarino won 2 gold medals and 2 trophies. We highly recommend tasting this if it are available during your visit.

They make 3 ranges of wines, These are Twin Islands, Opawa, and the Nautilus Estate range. The tasting offered during your visit will mainly be from the latter.

The Marlborough wine region grows the most Pinot Noir in New Zealand. This fact surprises wine lovers who believe Central Otago is the largest Pinot Noir Region in New Zealand. Pinot Noir is the second largest production at Nautilus. They were the first winery in the Southern Hemisphere to build a purpose built Pinot Noir Cellar. Nautilus Estate make a range of different Pinot Noirs ranging from regional blends to single vineyard wines. These wines come from both the Wairau and Awatere Valleys.
