No1 Family Estate Marlborough New Zealand

No1 Family Estate History

Owned and operated by Daniel Le Brun. Daniel is a 12th Generation French Champanoise. Daniels family first planted vines in the Champagne region of France in 1684. Daniel left France over 40 years ago in search of a new challenge. He purchased the first block of land near Renwick in the Wairau valley of Marlborough and setup his first venture in New Zealand.

No1 Family estate, his second venture, founded in 1997 by Daniel and his wife Adele. Daniel's aim was, and still is, to produce the best Méthode Traditionelle wine in New Zealand. Méthode Traditionelle is Champagne in all but name, however cannot be called Champagne as the fruit is grown and the wine produced in New Zealand. At the time of writing this page they are the only winery to just make Méthode Traditionelle wine, hence unique in New Zealand.

No1 Family estate vines and equipment

Daniel the chief wine maker and owner sticks to the main 3 grape varieties grown in the Champagne region of France. These being Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. All their wines use either one of the grape varieties or a blend of 2 or 3. They imported all of the equipment used in the making of their wines from France.  The bottles the wine is finished and presented for sale in are imported from France, hence Champagne in all but name.

Their wines

The winery is very traditional in having a range of wines including a wine for each Family member even though No1 Family Estate are a very small producer. Their 3 main wines are;

Cuvée No. 1 made with 100% Chardonnay grapes therefore a traditional Blanc de Blanc.

No 1 Rosé made with 100% Pinot Noir and a very delicate shade of pink.

Assemblé is a blend using all of the 3 grape varieties, hence a very tradition Méthode Traditionelle.
