Whitehaven Wines, Marlborough New Zealand

Whitehaven Wines History

Whitehaven wines, based in the Marlborough wine region, founded in 1994 by Sue and Greg White. Before setting up the winery Sue and Greg sailed the Pacific in their sailing boat. While sailing Sue and Greg had to shelter from a storm and the Marlborough Sounds became their haven. The name for Whitehaven wines is derived from Sue and Greg's surname and their haven, the Marlborough Sounds. Since their founding they have grown steadily with the USA being a very large market for their wines. Sue runs the business now since the death of Greg in 2007 from cancer.

Whitehaven Wines

They own a number of vineyards within the Marlborough wine region. Their vineyards are located throughout the region in both the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. The fruit from the different valleys and the locations within the valleys ensure the fruit grown has very different flavours. Therefore allowing the winemaker choices in the wine making process.

The Whitehaven wines white estate label is their largest production with their Sauvignon Blanc being by far the biggest production, as one would expect within the region. In 2018 the estate 2017 Sauvignon Blanc was awarded a gold medal at the Royal Easter show, therefore a good example of this wine. Other varieties produced under the estate label include Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Gruner Veltliner, Pinot Noir and a Pinot Noir Rose. If you are looking for something a little different, why not try their Hidden Barrel Oak fermented Sauvignon Blanc.

The Greg Label

The Whitehaven wines black Greg label is in honour of Sus's late husband. Made from small parcels of fruit and hand crafted wines. They make a Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir in this label. The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc, crafted from single vineyard fruit from the Awatere Valley, highlights the differences in fruit flavours coming from the Awatere Valley. Entered into the Air New Zealand wine show in 2017 and awarded the trophy Sauvignon Blanc honour. The Whitehaven wines Pinot Noir, grown in the Southern Valleys of the Wairau Valley, exhibits beautiful cherry and plum flavours. This wine will continue to age well until 2023.
